On Monday 12th October 2009 a workshop was run by lecturers from Qatar debate about “argumentation “ at Doha Independent Prep School for Boys

At the beginning of the workshop Jessica Prince  gave the students a statement (If you found a wallet with 5000 QR inside . will you give it to the police or keep it and spend the money? ) some students expressed  different opinions.

After  that  Jessica Prince divided the students into two teams one of them was the proposition and the other was the  opposition and showed  them how to be for or against a certain  topic and that the debate must continue for five minutes   .

Najwan Berekdar explained what argumentation is  and she said that it consists of three sections

1-Asseration or Statement 

2-Reason or Explanation

3-Evidince

Najwan gave the Ss the topic of “cigarettes are illegal ‘’ and four students acted as volunteers  and  put forth  the reasons  why cigarettes are illegal and Najwan asked the audience what the teams  said .

Five students  acted as volunteers and discussed with  Najwan” TV  has a bad influence “ The students gave some reasons why TV  has a bad influence.

Beth James taught the students about “Rebuttal “  which means  that students should  prove that their opponents’ opinion is not right by refuting it and giving evidence and their own opinion as well.

At the end of the session , the students were given a n evaluation form to fill in  about the workshop .

The English Department thanked the coaches and the students  for their great efforts.
